How NBA drafts work

Eight picks. Eight different franchises.

In Time Machine, Year and Finals Drafts, reveal a random NBA team and season. Choose one player for an open position, then move to the next team. Each franchise appears once, including renamed or relocated clubs. A team you shuffle past counts as shown. Franchise Draft uses one club across different seasons, without repeating a season.

Fill point guard, shooting guard, small forward, power forward and center, plus a guard, forward and utility player. You cannot draft the same person twice. Eligibility uses the recorded season position. If it is missing, the recorded career position determines eligible slots.

Today’s Daily

The NBA Daily Challenge has one ranked play per Eastern day for signed-in accounts, on the same teams for everyone in a different order, plus three unranked plays for anyone on different teams. Older published challenges keep their saved allowance. Each entry has one extra shuffle and a 30-second Pick Clock. Your best eligible ranked result counts for the date; practice earns no leaderboard entry or awards. Started clocks continue through reloads and leaving the page.

Daily is the timed challenge

Only Daily uses a 30-second Pick Clock. At zero, the server picks an eligible player for you and reveals the next team. Daily clocks continue while you are away. Time Machine, Year, Franchise and Finals Drafts are untimed. One extra shuffle is available when another team can still finish your roster.

Real facts, game estimates

PPG means points per game, RPG rebounds per game and APG assists per game. These are the selected player’s recorded season statistics. The current collection includes verified team-seasons between 1946-47 and 2025-26. Coverage has gaps; it is not a complete NBA history. Your completed roster receives a season-relative team grade from 0 to 100, shown as an estimated 82-game win-loss record. It is a game estimate, not a prediction of an actual NBA result.

Each NBA format has its own leaderboard. Year and Franchise boards can show all seasons or clubs, or one selected pool. Finish under your verified account name, or as a guest with a screened name or Anonymous. See basketball rankings.

Data sources and coverage

Season data: Sumitro Datta NBA and BAA records. CC0 1.0 (archive publisher listing).

  • Regular-season team stints from 1946-47 through 2025-26. Separate ABA records and combined multi-team player rows are excluded. The withdrawn 1954-55 Baltimore Bullets season has no recorded team W/L in this archive and is excluded.
  • Counting totals become per-game statistics using recorded appearances. A player needs 10 appearances and 8 minutes per game when minutes were recorded. Before 1951-52, qualification uses appearances and minutes stay blank.
  • Unrecorded statistics stay blank, including early minutes, rebounds, steals, blocks, turnovers and three-point data. A shooting percentage with no attempts stays blank.
  • Positions use the recorded season position. Where it is missing, the recorded career position supplies broad eligibility. No exact season position is guessed.
  • Stable Basketball-Reference IDs identify players across seasons and teams. Former team names are retained. Renamed clubs share a franchise; unrelated defunct clubs stay separate. Original Charlotte history belongs to Charlotte, while New Orleans has its own franchise.
  • The archive publisher lists this dataset as CC0 on Kaggle and identifies Basketball-Reference as its source. DreamDraft filters regular-season club stints, derives per-game statistics and maps roster eligibility. The published archive license does not establish ownership of upstream rights or license team marks and photographs.

Saved drafts from the previous catalogue retain SportsDataverse hoopR data, derived from ESPN, published under CC BY 4.0. DreamDraft filtered game records, aggregated team stints, mapped positions and calculated per-game statistics. Those saved drafts keep their original data and scoring model.

Frequently asked questions

How many players make up a basketball roster?

The basketball game uses eight slots: point guard, shooting guard, small forward, power forward, center, guard, forward and utility. Each pick fills one eligible open slot.

What does the basketball result mean?

Real NBA season statistics feed a separate basketball game model. The completed rotation receives a team grade from 0 to 100 and an estimated 82-game record. Both describe a game result, not a real-world forecast.
