How NHL drafts work

Eight picks. Eight roster slots.

Reveal one random NHL club and season, then choose a player for an open position. Fill C, LW, RW, D1, D2, G, F and UTIL. Centers and wings can fill F. Any skater can fill UTIL. Only a goalie can fill G.

Each person can appear once. Time Machine and Stanley Cup Drafts reveal each franchise once, including renamed or relocated clubs. Year Draft cycles through the chosen season’s clubs before repeating any. Small early leagues may reveal a club again. Franchise Draft uses different seasons from one club. A team you shuffle past counts as shown.

Only Daily has a Pick Clock

The Daily has one ranked play per Eastern day for signed-in accounts, on the same teams for everyone in a different order, plus three unranked plays for anyone on different teams. Each team has a 30-second Pick Clock. At zero, the server picks an eligible player and reveals the next team. Leaving the page does not pause the clock. Your ranked result counts for that date.

Time Machine, Year, Franchise and Stanley Cup Drafts are untimed. Each draft has one extra shuffle when another team can still finish the roster.

Skaters and goalies use different statistics

Skaters show games played and season totals for goals, assists and points. Goalies show games played, save percentage, goals-against average and season wins. The verified collection runs from 1917-18 through 2025-26, with gaps. Every statistic describes the selected season.

Your finished roster receives a projected win-loss record for an 84-game season. Losses include overtime and shootout losses. The record is a game estimate based on the selected player-seasons.

Rankings keep each format separate. Year and Franchise filters compare a chosen pool. Each account or guest browser keeps its best eligible result per pool. Equal projected records share a rank. View hockey rankings.

Hockey draft questions

Which positions do I need?

Fill center, left wing, right wing, two defense slots, one goalie, a forward and a utility skater. A center or wing can fill the forward slot. Any skater can fill utility.

Are all five formats timed?

Only Daily Challenge has a 30-second Pick Clock. Time Machine, Year, Franchise and Stanley Cup Drafts are untimed.

What do the player statistics mean?

Skaters show games played, goals, assists and points from the selected club and season. Goalies show games played, save percentage, goals-against average and season wins. Completed rosters also include shots on goal, plus-minus, penalty minutes and goalie shutouts.

What does the projected record mean?

It is an 84-game win-loss estimate from your selected player-seasons. Losses include overtime and shootout losses. The record describes a DreamDraft game result.

Data sources and coverage

Season data: Official NHL club statistics and regular-season team summary. No open-data license is asserted. Public NHL statistical facts only; no photographs or logos are included.

  • Qualifying NHL regular-season club stints from 1917-18 through the completed 2025-26 season. The canceled 2004-05 season has no player records.
  • Skaters require ten games. Six average ice minutes are required when ice time was recorded; older unrecorded ice time remains unknown. Goalies require five games and recorded goals-against average.
  • Skater counting statistics are shown as season totals for the selected club. Goalie save percentage and goals-against average preserve official precision; wins and shutouts are season totals. Unrecorded statistics, including early save percentage and ice time, remain null.
  • Player identities, club-season identities, franchise lineage and season wins, losses, ties and overtime losses come from official NHL responses. Ties remain separate from overtime losses. Relocated and expansion clubs retain official franchise identities.
  • Stanley Cup Draft selects NHL champion club-seasons and uses their regular-season player statistics. The 1925 Victoria Cougars were not an NHL club and are excluded. No Cup was awarded in 1919 or 2005. Projected 84-game seasons are game estimates.
