Rules & scoring

Choose one forward, defenseman, goalie or the team from your league’s NHL club. Each manager gets one different pick. Picking the team uses your one pick, just like picking a player.

  • One through six managers can play. The creator counts as the first manager.
  • The draft starts automatically 60 minutes before puck drop. Every manager gets an email, and turns begin 10 minutes later. The commissioner can start it sooner.
  • Each turn lasts 60 seconds. A missed turn uses your saved preferences, then an available legal pick.
  • Draft from the listed team roster, not confirmed active players. A listed player may not play.
  • Selections close at scheduled puck drop or actual play, whichever comes first. Listed rosters can refresh before puck drop. Your saved pick and its position stay fixed.
  • Final official statistics decide league standings. Missing scoring details stay pending.

Light the Lamp questions

How do I play Light the Lamp?

Create a league, choose an NHL club and invite up to five friends. Each game’s draft starts automatically 60 minutes before puck drop, and every manager gets an email. Each manager drafts one forward, defenseman, goalie or the team itself from the listed team roster. Picking the team uses your one pick. Listed players are not confirmed active and may not play. Missing final player facts stay pending. Follow the live box score and league chat on the same page.

Can I play by myself?

Yes. A league can have one through six human managers. You count as the first manager when you create it.

What is the difference between G, GA and TOTAL?

G means goals and GA means a goalie’s goals against. TOTAL is your Light the Lamp score. Forwards and defensemen earn points for goals and assists, with overtime and shorthanded bonuses. Goalies earn points for low goals against and assists. A team pick earns 4 points for four goals, 5 for five, and so on. The league’s Rules & scoring section shows its exact policy, including the original rules for older saved leagues.

Do I have to refresh the scores?

The league page checks for score updates automatically while it is open. Chat updates separately so you can keep writing and reading messages. A delayed source is marked on the scoreboard.

Can I change my pick after puck drop?

Selections close at scheduled puck drop or actual play, whichever comes first. Your selection stays saved for that game. Your next game uses a new draft.
