Is there a 162-0 baseball game?

Yes. DreamDraft’s baseball draft game has you pick 13 players from MLB team-seasons since 1876, then turns that roster into an estimated record over a 162-game season. A perfect 162-0 isn’t possible in the game’s model, though. The strongest roster anyone could draft projects to 152-10.

Key takeaways

  • A solo draft is free in your browser, and you don’t need an account.
  • You fill 13 spots: eight fielders, a designated hitter, three starting pitchers and a closer.
  • Each pick comes from a random MLB team and season, and each player is rated against his own league that season.
  • The best possible DreamDraft roster goes 152-10. The real MLB record is 116 wins.

How does the 162-0 baseball draft work?

Each turn reveals a random MLB team and season. You take one player from that team for an open spot: catcher, first base, second base, third base, shortstop, one of the three outfield spots, designated hitter, one of three starting pitchers or closer. Then the next team appears. When all 13 spots are filled, the game rates your lineup and turns the rating into a 162-game record.

Hitting makes up 58% of the team rating, the three starters 32% and the closer 10%. Hitters are rated on on-base percentage, slugging, batting average and steals, and pitchers on ERA, WHIP and strikeouts per nine innings. Each stat is compared with the player’s own league that season, so a 1.12 ERA in 1968 and a 1.74 ERA in 2000 are each judged against their own year. A lineup that’s all bats and no arms gives some rating back, because the model takes points off for a big gap between hitting and pitching.

The same model runs every format. The baseball Daily Challenge starts everyone on the same draft with a 30-second clock on each pick. One Year keeps your picks inside one season, Franchise Legends keeps them inside one club’s history, and World Series Draft uses only championship teams.

Can a DreamDraft roster go 162-0?

No. The record comes from one formula: 81 wins, plus 1.8 wins for every rating point above 50, capped at 162. A perfect season needs a team rating of about 95 out of 100. We searched every eligible player at every spot in the current catalogue, using each club once as every new draft does, and the best lineup the game allows rates 89.5. That’s a 152-10 season.

So the real chase is 152-10, which is still 36 more wins than any MLB team has managed. The most wins in a real MLB season is 116, shared by the 1906 Chicago Cubs and the 2001 Seattle Mariners.
